Dog Story:
Hey all, my name is Jewel and I'm a senior lady...but you'd never know it by my energy. I've had lots of changes over the past couple years and kind of forgot some of that stuff my foster calls "obedience", but with my foster parents' reminders it all comes back. I'm pretty well housetrained and had obedience school years ago so I need reminders. I walk real nicely with a gentle leader and I stay quietly in my crate at night. I love washing little kid faces, but even better yet is finding chippers, bunnies, and tweetie birds!

Foster Family's Notes:  Jewel's family fell on hardships so she spent time with a relative, then was boarded for a while. She has a LOT of energy and has selective hearing outside with all the really cool things to chase; for that reason we insist that she be adopted to a home with a secure physical fence. Jewel appears robust, and aside from old-age related clouding in the eyes, she does not show her age at all. In fact, our neighbor told us that we must be lying about Jewel's age: "she can't be more that 2 years old!" Like Jewel said, she's had obedience training a while back but really needs reinforcement of those skills. Jewel is great with people and other dogs; not sure about kitties. She would make a great hiking or jogging companion. If you are interested in Jewel, please complete the adoption application.

Update 8/13/09:
Jewel has really settled in with us and some of her humor has begun to show. She wants to get on the bed, and when denied so has been to known to use her muzzle to give our bed a good shake! She still rarely barks, and only in response to the doorbell ringing. She loves car rides, being outside harassing the chipmunks and rabbits, walking with us on her gentle leader, and especially... food! Jewel could stand to gain a few pounds and actually loves her fruits and veggies. Jewel isn't a "velcro" dog but loves to be with us wherever we go. She especially enjoyed a weekend out "camping" in our RV! Jewel has proven to be a true buddy to humans of all ages and other dogs; we haven't introduced her to cats at all. Nobody who has met her believes that she is going to be 11 in October! We had a few housetraining issues in the first couple weeks, but that seems to have resolved. She still requires a securely fenced yard as she focuses exclusively on prey and ignores our calls; food does get her to come when called while she is hunting in our yard. Jewel likes to check out the counter tops but hasn't actually taken anything yet. She gets along pretty well with our female Flatcoated retriever and male Dachshund. If you are looking for a loyal pal, bed buddy, and hiking partner, Jewel is your girl. Write "Jewel in MN #1660" on your adoption application.
