Description:

The following was written by Hobie's current owners. He is being surrendered due to the lack of time they are able to spend working with him and feel he would do better in another home. If you are interested in adopting please fill out an adoption application.

Hobie is an easy going and extremely loving boy! He plays well with our one-year-old dog. Hobie wants to please and be around people, but is also content to be outside for hours by himself. We think he may have been an outside dog. He prefers to be near you when indoors. He likes to sit near you and wag his tail to be petted, go on walks, spend time outside tracking birds and chew on his favorite kong. His personality is laid back, gentle and loving.

Hobie knows sit and down, is learning stay and to fetch. He travels very well in the car, just hangs out in the back seat and watches out the window. He is crated during the day or stays in the back yard while we are at work. Hobie walks fairly well on a leash, but can become excited and pull a bit. Hobie has only chewed on flip flops when first arriving at our house but has left alone other items within his reach. Outdoors, he may think anything on the ground is fair game. A simple and easy, “no” and Hobie immediately stops what he’s doing and looks right at you. Hobie paces during thunderstorms, but does not whine or bark. He has never barked in the house. Outside he will alert you if a stranger is approaching or a squirrel is close, but all you need to do is get his attention and tell him “no”.

The perfect home for Hobie is one with a fenced yard where he can enjoy the outdoors or perhaps a farm, or large acreage. Our fence is 4ft picket, and Hobie has never tried to jump or climb it. However, he is a curious dog, and eager to explore, so keep Hobie on a lead when in the open. Hobie has gotten along with every person and dog he’s met so far. He has played well with 5 and 6 year old children, but has never met any children younger. Hobie is a bit leery of men at times. He’s been very submissive and shy around other males who have visited our home so any males adopting Hobie should be prepared to be patient and use positive reinforcement training. He enjoys being active, but does not seem to require a high amount of activity. A daily walk (walks are his favorite!) and some playtime is perfect. Hobie is up to date on his vaccines, on heartworm preventive and neutered.

History:
Hobie was rescued from a shelter by Maple Woods Community College veterinary school. The students at Maple Woods cared for Hobie for a semester and completed vaccinations, grooming (ears, teeth), microchip etc. At the end of the semester Hobie was put up for adoption and we adopted him in May 2009. We had hoped he would be a good companion for our first dog and were told he was two years old. We quickly noticed Hobie’s activity level was unusually low for a two-year old and, when the veterinary school sent us his AKC papers (after the adoption), we learned his true age.
